Cars Vs Bikes: sharing the roads before it’s too late!

Hit the brakes! Did you know over 1.35 million people worldwide are injured in car-bike crashes every year? That’s a scary number, especially since bikes are a healthy, eco-friendly way to get around.
So, how can we make our roads safer for everyone? Here’s the scoop for both cyclists and drivers:
- Cyclists: Be Seen, Be Safe!
- Light Up Your Ride: Darkness is dangerous. Use bright front and back lights, even during dusk or dawn.
- Helmet Hero: A helmet can save your life in a crash. Wear one that fits snugly every single ride.
- Signal Your Moves: Just like cars, use hand signals to let drivers know where you’re going (left turn, right turn, stopping).
- Obey the Rules: Stop signs and red lights apply to bikes too! Be predictable and share the road responsibly.
- Drivers: Watch Out for Two Wheels!
- Eyes on the Road: Put down your phone and focus on driving. Texting while driving increases your crash risk by 23 times! (Source: Virginia Tech Transportation Institute)
- Give Bikes Space: When passing a cyclist, leave at least 3 feet (1 meter) of space. It’s the law in many places, and it keeps everyone safe.
- Check Your Blind Spots: Cyclists can be hard to see, especially when turning. Always check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.
- Yield to Bikes: They have the same right to the road as you do. Stop at signs and lights, and be patient with cyclists who are following the rules.
- Sharing the Road is a Two-Way Street!
- Cities: Invest in protected bike lanes and clear signage to separate bikes and cars.
- Everyone: Spread the word about safe cycling and driving practices. Talk to friends, family, and neighbors.
